¿Do I need to Exchange my A4 paper/Green Card for the new TIE?

Some British nationals currently living in Spain will have a paper A4 NIE certificate, while others will have a green credit card-sized piece of semi-laminated paper. Whether they say “permanente” or not, both of these documents remain equally valid in demonstrating your rights and residency status within the Withdrawal Agreement while living in Spain, even after the end of the transition period which ended on 31st December 2020.

Despite recent issues when travelling and confusion for Brits who were turned away from flights even though they had residency as above, things have now been cleared up with the authorities and airlines and the above documents are still valid.

!Don´t be confused with the white A4 NIE, this is a identification number needed for a lot of things in Spain but it is not Residency¡.

Some people may want to exchange in the future, for either their own personal reasons, you may decide to have a shiny new card instead of the tatty paper or card, it's easier to show ID instead of getting out the NIE and Green card separate, and having to carry around the passport although this will still be needed for Airport, international and overseas travel.

or at sometime in the future it may become compulsory.

At the moment i would not suggest the exchange because of the backlog with the new TIE arrivals but if it is something you would like to do in the future, please get in contact for help to exchange with a competitive no nonsense quote, i will make all the necessary arrangements for you and meet you at the Immigration(If its Alicante) or give you clear and precise instructions with the correct documents needed
